Using PREP to improve Performance

Using PREP to improve Performance

Using PREP Guide

The player is the judge as they rate themselves from 1-10 recording their scores

P = Pick a quality

Pick a quality you commit to being today. For example,

  1. “I will be focus today.”
  2. I commit to being grateful today.”
  3. “Today, I’m passionate about playing.”
  4. “I will trust myself fully.”
  5. “I will be positive all day.”

The average player takes the Victim perspective and lets their last performance and how they feel at the time determine how they are going to be. But, the focused and mentally tough are guided by their commitment. You choose how you are going to be.

  • Professional
  • Dedicated
  • Mentally tough
  • Committed
  • Intense
  • Focused

The ‘quality’ chosen becomes the player’s ‘inner game’ for the day.

R = Release Your Circumstance

‘Releasing’ is part of shrinking the game. Remember to shrink the game, focus on things

  1. You control
  2. In the present moment
  3. That are important to your performance

Let go of anything else.

Before a game begins, consider

  1. What excuses do I already have for not playing well today?
  2. What beliefs do I have that may keep me from playing well?
  3. What circumstances might hook me today?
  4. What am I afraid of?

Do you need to release any internal or external circumstance?

  1. Needing to be perfect
  2. Thinking you’re not good enough
  3. Wishing something hadn’t happened

  • BREATH. INHALE, Take a deep breath, exhale – let the concern go. Repeat.
  • Imagine when getting changed, you are leaving your concerns on the floor, which will be there after the game, so don’t worry about them now.
  • Move, breath the way you would if you were totally confident
  • Talk through what is upsetting you,

E = Energise Your Body

How do you want to feel before a game?

When playing poorly, players focus on themselves

  1. “Poor me?”
  2. “Why me?”

As a result their bodies can feel ‘heavy, sad or angry’.

When playing great, they focus out ‘on the game’. They’re not playing ‘in their head’ and they are not worrying.

The key aim is for the player to get to feeling as close as possible to how they want to before a game.

Be a ’24 hour’ player. What you eat, quality of your rest, quality and timings of workouts and other choices, all impact on their performance. Whatever you put in your body off the field, comes out in the field.

P = Pre-Play Your Performance

Using your imagination to see, feel and hear the way they want the game to unfold.
